Spectral Theories, IV, p. 314

The aim of this exercise is to give a more direct proof of Theorem 1 of IV, p. 149. Let E be a complex infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and uu a compact and normal endomorphism of E.

(a) Now prove that, for every nonzero complex number λ\lambda, the eigenspace Ker(u−λ1Eu-\lambda 1_E) is of finite dimension.

(b) Suppose uu is hermitian. Now prove that there exists x0≠0x_0\not = 0 in E such that

∥u(x0)∥2∥x0∥2=\frac{\|u(x_0)\|^2}{\|x_0\|^2}= supx∈E−{0}∥u(x)∥2∥x∥2_{x\in E-\{0\}}\frac{\|u(x)\|^2}{\|x\|^2}.

(c) Now prove that x0x_0 is an eigenvector of uu for an eigenvalue λ\lambda such that ∣λ∣=∥u∥|\lambda |=\|u\|.

(d) Now prove that there exists a countable set I, an orthonormal family (ei)i∈I(e_i)_{i\in I} in E and a family (λi)i∈I(\lambda_i)_{i\in I} of real numbers such that

u(x)=∑i∈Iλi⟨ei∣x⟩ei u(x) =\sum_{i\in I}\lambda_i\langle e_i|x\rangle e_i

for all x∈Ex\in E.

(e) Extend the result to the case where uu is compact and normal. (Write u=u1+iu2u=u_1+iu_2 where u1u_1 and u2u_2 are compact, hermitian and permutable.)
