Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 3. Fonctions de type positif
Let A be an involutive Banach algebra and a positive linear form on A.
a) For all and in A, one has and
b) If A is unital, then the linear form is continuous and its norm is equal to .
The mapping is a positive Hermitian form on A; it therefore satisfies and for all and in A (EVT, V, p. 2, remark and p. 3, prop. 2).
Let us prove b). Let be a hermitian element of norm . The spectral radius of is less than , hence the spectrum of is contained in the open unit disc D of (Theorem 1 of I, p. 24). Let be a holomorphic function on D such that for all (Lemma 1 of V, p. 435). Applying the holomorphic functional calculus to the element and to the function , the element satisfies I, p. 74, Theorem 5). By Prop. 3 of V, p. 435, one moreover has , hence is hermitian. We then have , whence .
Now let be of norm . The element is hermitian and , hence applying a) with , we find
with equality if . The linear form is therefore continuous, and its norm is equal to . Assertion b) is proved.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
