Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 3. Fonctions de type positif

Let A be an involutive Banach algebra.

a) For every Hilbert space E, every morphism of involutive algebras φ:A→L(E)\varphi : A\rightarrow \mathscr{L}(E) and every vector x∈Ex\in E, the linear form defined on A by λ(a)=⟨x∣φ(a)x⟩\lambda (a) =\langle x|\varphi (a)x\rangle is a continuous positive linear form;

b) Let λ∈A+′\lambda \in A'_+. The mapping ff of A×AA\times A into C\mathbf{C} defined by f(a,b)=f(a, b) = λ(a∗b)\lambda (a^*b) for every (a,b)∈A×A(a, b)\in A\times A is a universally positive kernel on A.

Let us prove a). For every a∈Aa\in A, one has

λ(a∗a)=⟨x∣φ(a∗a)x⟩=∥φ(a)x∥2⩾0 \lambda (a^*a) =\langle x|\varphi (a^*a)x\rangle =\|\varphi (a)x\|^2\geqslant 0

therefore λ\lambda is a positive linear form on A; it is continuous since φ\varphi is continuous (Prop. 2 of I, p. 104).

Let us prove b). The function ff is continuous. For every n∈Nn\in \mathbf{N}, every family (ai)0⩽i⩽n(a_i)_{0\leqslant i\leqslant n} in A and every family (ti)0⩽i⩽n(t_i)_{0\leqslant i\leqslant n} of complex numbers, one has

∑i=0n∑j=0nt‾itjf(ai,aj)=λ((∑i=0ntiai)∗(∑j=0ntjaj))⩾0 \sum_{i=0}^n\sum_{j=0}^n\overline{t}_it_jf(a_i, a_j) =\lambda ((\sum_{i=0}^nt_ia_i)^*(\sum_{j=0}^nt_ja_j))\geqslant 0

whence the result (Def. 1 of V, p. 433).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
