Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 3. Fonctions de type positif
The set of extreme points of Pos is equal to the union of the set of extreme points of Pos and of the zero function. Moreover, the closed convex hull of the set of extreme points of Pos contains Pos.
By cor. of prop. 13, the set Pos is a cap of the pointed convex cone Pos(G), which is defined by the gauge (EVT, II, p. 61, def. 3 and prop. 4). Its extreme points are therefore the zero function and the elements of Pos belonging to the extreme generators of Pos(G) (EVT, II, p. 62, cor. 1). These are the extreme points of Pos (EVT, II, p. 61, prop. 3). The first assertion follows.
Let us prove the second assertion. Let Pos. Since the set Pos is compact for the weak topology (cor. of prop. 13), there exists a filter on the convex hull of the extreme points of Pos which converges to (EVT, II, p. 59, th. 1). Since the closed balls of the Banach space are closed for the weak topology and since , we have lim (indeed, otherwise there would exist a real number and a filter on the closed ball of radius in which would be finer than , which would imply that belongs to this closed ball).
From the description of the extreme points of Pos(G), every element of the convex hull of the extreme points of Pos is a function of positive type on G of the form
where I is a finite set, is an extreme point of Pos for every , and . We have (lemma 4 of V, p. 446). If , the function
therefore belongs to the convex hull of the extreme points of Pos. Since lim, we conclude that belongs to the closed convex hull of the extreme points of Pos. The assertion follows.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
