Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 3. Fonctions de type positif

For every x≠ex\not =e in G, there exists an irreducible unitary representation π\pi of G such that π(x)\pi (x) is not the identity endomorphism of the space of π\pi.

Let x∈Gx\in G be such that π(x)\pi (x) is the identity for every π∈G^\pi \in \widehat{G}. It follows that φ(x)=φ(e)=1\varphi (x) =\varphi (e) = 1 for every extreme point φ\varphi of Pos1(G)_1(G) (prop. 11 of V, p. 444), hence for every φ∈\varphi \in Pos1(G)_1(G) by prop. 14 since the linear form φ↦φ(e)\varphi \mapsto \varphi (e) is continuous on Pos1(G)_1(G) endowed with the weak topology (th. 3). But if x≠ex\not =e, there exists f∈L2(G)f\in L^2(G) of norm 1 such that ⟨f∣γG(x)f⟩=0\langle f|\boldsymbol{\gamma }_G(x)f\rangle = 0(V, p. 406, lemma 3). Since the left-hand side of this equality is of the form φ(x)\varphi (x), where φ∈\varphi \in Pos1_1(G), this is a contradiction.

If G is not locally compact, it is not always true that the irreducible unitary representations of G separate the points of G.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
