Let X be a separated topological space. A continuous function f:X×X→R is said to be conditionally of negative type if it satisfies the conditions
(i) For every x∈X, one has f(x,x)=0;
(ii) For all x and y in X, one has f(x,y)=f(y,x);
(iii) For every integer n∈N, every family (xi)0⩽i⩽n of elements of X and every family (ti)0⩽i⩽n of real numbers such that
i=1∑nti=0
one has
i=0∑nj=0∑ntitjf(xi,xj)⩽0
Denote by Noy−(X) the set of functions conditionally of negative type on X×X.
a) Let E be a real Hilbert space and φ:X→E a continuous mapping. The function f(x,y)=∥φ(x)−φ(y)∥2 is conditionally of negative type. b) Let f∈ Noy−(X) and x0∈X. There exist a real Hilbert space E and a continuous mapping φ:X→E such that
a) For every (x,y)∈X×X, one has f(x,y)=∥φ(x)−φ(y)∥2;
b) The family (φ(x)−φ(x0))x∈X is total in E.
One says that (E,φ) is a cyclic Hilbertian representation of f.
c) Let f∈ Noy−(X) and x0∈X. Let (E,φ) and (E′,φ′) be cyclic Hilbertian representations of f. There exists a unique affine isometry u:E→E′ such that φ′=u∘φ.
d) The set Noy−(X) is a convex cone in C(X×X;R). For every universally positive kernel g∈ Noy+(X) such that g is real-valued, the mapping f(x,y)=g(x,x)−g(x,y) belongs to Noy−(X).
e) Let F be a filter on Noy−(X) which converges simply to f:X×X→R. If f is continuous, then f∈ Noy−(X).
f ) Let f:X×X→R be a continuous function satisfying conditions (i) and (ii) above. Let x0∈X. Let g:X×X→R be such that g(x,y)=f(x,x0)+ f(y,x0)−f(x,y). Then f∈ Noy−(X) if and only if g∈ Noy+(X).
g) Suppose X nonempty. Let f:X×X→R be a continuous function satisfying conditions (i) and (ii) above. Then f∈ Noy−(X) if and only if one has exp(−tf)∈ Noy+(X) for all t∈R+ ("Schoenberg's theorem"). (To prove that exp(−f) is of positive type when f∈ Noy−(X), fix x0∈X; prove that
g(x,y)= exp(f(x,x0)+f(y,x0)−f(x,y))
and
h(x,y)= exp(−f(x,x0)) exp(−f(y,x0))
belong to Noy+(X).)
If G is a topological group, a function φ∈C(G) is said to be of negative type if the function f on G×G defined by f(g,h)=φ(h−1g) is a conditionally negative type kernel.
