Spectral Theories, V, p. 515
Let n be an integer ⩾1. Let N denote the euclidean norm on Rn, and let λn denote Lebesgue measure on Rn. Let ωn denote the unique positive measure of total mass 1 on the sphere Sn⊂Rn+1 invariant under the action of the orthogonal group O(n+1,R)(cf. INT, VIII, p. 116, exercise 8).
We identify Rn with the complement of a projective hyperplane H of the projective space Pn(R)(cf. TG, VI, p. 15, prop. 5), and measures on Rn will be interpreted as measures on Pn(R) carried by the complement of H.
For every g∈GL(n+1,R), let g denote the homeomorphism of Pn(R) defined by g.
a) The positive measure cn on Rn defined by
cn=π−(n+1)/2Γ(2n+1)(1+N2)−(n+1)/2λn
("Cauchy measure") is bounded and of total mass 1. If n=1, it is the stable measure with parameter 1 (cf. exercise V, p. 496). For every projective hyperplane H′ of Pn(R), one has cn(H′)=0.
b) The canonical mapping of Rn+1−{0} into Pn(R) defines, by passing to subspaces, a continuous surjective mapping σ:Sn−(Rn×{0})→Rn. One has σ(ωn)=cn.
c) Let g∈GL(n+1,R). There exist a∈GL(n,R) and b∈Rn such that the image measure g(cn) is equal to the image of cn under the affine mapping x↦a(x)+b.
In what follows, the aim is to prove a converse of this assertion. d) Let μ be a bounded positive measure on Pn(R) such that every projective hyperplane is μ-negligible. The set of g∈GL(n+1,R) such that g(μ)=μ and ∣det(g)∣=1 is a compact subgroup of GL(n+1,R). e) Let μ be a bounded positive measure on Pn(R) of total mass 1 such that, for every g∈GL(n+1,R), there exists an affine mapping f of Rn such that g(μ)=f(μ). Every projective hyperplane is μ-negligible.
f) Let Kμ be the subgroup of g∈GL(n+1,R) such that g(μ)=μ. There exists h∈GL(n+1,R) such that Kμ⊂hO(n+1,R)h−1.
g) Let K=h−1Kμh. One has O(n+1,R)=G⋅K, where G is the subgroup of O(n+1,R) consisting of the matrices

with x∈O(n,R).
h) The measure h−1(μ) coincides with cn. (Observe that the group K acts transitively on Sn and that the image measure σ(h−1(μ)) is a K-invariant measure on Sn.)
