Theory of Sets, III, 229

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let E and F be two sets, let ff be an injection of E into F, and let gg be a mapping of F into E. Show that there exist two subsets A, B of E such that B=E−A\mathrm{B} = \mathrm{E} - \mathrm{A}, and two subsets A′\mathrm{A}', B′\mathrm{B}' of F such that B′=F−A′\mathrm{B}' = \mathrm{F} - \mathrm{A}', for which A′=f(A)\mathrm{A}' = f(\mathrm{A}) and B=g(B′)\mathrm{B} = g(\mathrm{B}'). (Let R=E−g(F)\mathrm{R} = \mathrm{E} - g(\mathrm{F}) and put h=g∘fh = g \circ f; take A to be the intersection of the subsets M of E such that M⊃R∪h(M)\mathrm{M} \supset \mathrm{R} \cup h(\mathrm{M}).)
