Theory of Sets, III, 241
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let or denote the ordinal Ord (N) (§ 2, Exercise 14). The set of all integers is then a well-ordered set isomorphic to the set of all ordinals . For each integer we denote again by (by abuse of language) the ordinal Ord .
(a) Show that for each cardinal the relation " is an ordinal and Card " is collectivizing (use Zermelo's theorem). Let denote the set of all ordinals such that Card .
(b) For each ordinal define a function on the well-ordered set of ordinals by transfinite induction as follows : , and for each ordinal such that , is the least upper bound (§ 2, Exercise 14 (d)) of the set of ordinals such that for at least one ordinal . Show that, if , then and that, if , then . Put ; is said to be the initial ordinal with index . We have . Put ; is said to be the aleph of index . In particular, .
(c) Show that for each infinite cardinal the least upper bound of the set of ordinals is an initial ordinal , and that (consider the least ordinal such that ); in other words, is the least ordinal such that . For each ordinal the mapping , defined on , is an isomorphism of the well-ordered set onto the well-ordered set of cardinals ; in particular, is the least cardinal . Show that, if has no predecessor, then for every strictly increasing mapping of an ordinal into such that , we have
(d) Deduce from (c) that is a normal ordinal functional symbol (§ 2, Exercise 17).
