Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

(a) Show that if α⩾2\alpha \geqslant 2 and if β\beta has no predecessor, then αβ\alpha^\beta is an indecomposable ordinal (cf. § 2, Exercise 16 (a)); if α\alpha is finite and if β=ωγ\beta = \omega\gamma, then αβ=ωγ\alpha^\beta = \omega^\gamma; if α\alpha is infinite and if π\pi is the greatest indecomposable ordinal ⩽α\leqslant \alpha, then αβ=πβ\alpha^\beta = \pi^\beta (use Exercise 11).

(b) An ordinal δ\delta is critical with respect to the functional symbol f(ξ,η)=ξηf(\xi, \eta) = \xi\eta if and only if, for each α\alpha such that 1<α⩽δ1 < \alpha \leqslant \delta, the equation δ=αξ\delta = \alpha^\xi has a solution; the unique solution ξ\xi of this equation is then indecomposable (use Exercise 13 (e), together with Exercise 18 (d) of § 2). Conversely, for each α>1\alpha > 1 and each indecomposable ordinal π\pi, απ\alpha^\pi is a critical ordinal with respect to ξη\xi\eta (use Exercise 13 (c)). Deduce that δ\delta is a critical ordinal with respect to ξη\xi\eta if and only if δ\delta is of the form ωωμ\omega^{\omega^\mu} (cf. Exercise 11 (b)).

(c) For an ordinal ε\varepsilon to be critical with respect to the functional symbol f(ξ,η)=ξηf(\xi, \eta) = \xi^\eta, i.e., such that γε=ε\gamma^\varepsilon = \varepsilon for each γ\gamma satisfying 2⩽γ⩽ε2 \leqslant \gamma \leqslant \varepsilon, it is sufficient that 2ε=ε2^\varepsilon = \varepsilon. Show that the least critical ordinal ε0\varepsilon_0 with respect to ξη\xi^\eta is countable (cf. Exercise 13 (d)).
