Theory of Sets, III, 249

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let E be an infinite set and let (Xi)1⩽i⩽m(\mathfrak{X}_i)_{1 \leqslant i \leqslant m} be a finite partition of the set Fn(E)\mathfrak{F}_n(\mathrm{E}) of subsets of E having nn elements. Show that there exists an index ii and an infinite subset F of E such that every subset of F with nn elements belongs to Xi\mathfrak{X}_i. (Proof by induction on nn. For each a∈Ea \in \mathrm{E} show that there exists an index j(a)j(a) and an infinite subset M(a)\mathrm{M}(a) of E−{a}\mathrm{E} - \{a\} such that, for every subset A of M(a)\mathrm{M}(a) with n−1n-1 elements, {a}∪A\{a\} \cup \mathrm{A} belongs to Xj(a)\mathfrak{X}_{j(a)}. Then define a sequence (ai)(a_i) of elements of E as follows : a1a_1 is an arbitrary element of E, a2a_2 is an arbitrary element of M(a1)\mathrm{M}(a_1), a3a_3 is defined in terms of M(a1)\mathrm{M}(a_1) and a2a_2 in the same way as a2a_2 was defined in terms of E and a1a_1, and so on. Show that the set F of elements of a suitable subsequence of the sequence (ai)(a_i) satisfies the required conditions.)
