Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let I be a directed set and let (Eα)α∈I(E_\alpha)_{\alpha \in I} be a family of lattices such that each EαE_\alpha, endowed with the opposite ordering, is Noetherian (§ 6, no. 5). For each pair (α,β)(\alpha, \beta) of indices in I such that α⩽β\alpha \leqslant \beta let

fαβ:Eβ→Eαf_{\alpha\beta} : E_\beta \to E_\alpha

be an increasing mapping, and suppose that (Eα,fαβ)(E_\alpha, f_{\alpha\beta}) is an inverse system of sets relative to I. For each α∈I\alpha \in I let GαG_\alpha be a non-empty subset of EαE_\alpha such that (i) no two distinct elements of GαG_\alpha are comparable, (ii) fαβ(Gβ)=Gαf_{\alpha\beta}(G_\beta) = G_\alpha whenever α⩽β\alpha \leqslant \beta, (iii) for each α⩽β\alpha \leqslant \beta and each xα∈Gαx_\alpha \in G_\alpha, fαβ−1(xα)\overset{-1}{f_{\alpha\beta}}(x_\alpha) has a greatest element Mαβ(xα)M_{\alpha\beta}(x_\alpha) in EβE_\beta, (iv) whenever α⩽β\alpha \leqslant \beta, if hβ∈Eβh_\beta \in E_\beta is such that there exists yβ∈Gβy_\beta \in G_\beta such that yβ⩽hβy_\beta \leqslant h_\beta, then for each xα∈Gαx_\alpha \in G_\alpha such that xα⩽fαβ(hβ)x_\alpha \leqslant f_{\alpha\beta}(h_\beta) there exists xβ∈Gβx_\beta \in G_\beta such that xβ⩽hβx_\beta \leqslant h_\beta and xα=fαβ(xβ)x_\alpha = f_{\alpha\beta}(x_\beta). Under these conditions the inverse limit of the inverse system of subsets (Gα)(G_\alpha) is not empty. The proof runs as follows:

(a) Let J be a finite subset of I. A family (xα)α∈J(x_\alpha)_{\alpha \in J}, where xα∈Gαx_\alpha \in G_\alpha for all α∈J\alpha \in J, is said to be coherent if it satisfies the following two conditions :

(i) if α∈J\alpha \in J, β∈J\beta \in J, α⩽β\alpha \leqslant \beta, then xα=fαβ(xβ)x_\alpha = f_{\alpha\beta}(x_\beta); (ii) for each upper bound γ\gamma of J in I there exists xγ∈Gγx_\gamma \in G_\gamma such that xα=fαγ(xγ)x_\alpha = f_{\alpha\gamma}(x_\gamma) for all α∈J\alpha \in J. Show that, for each upper bound γ\gamma of J in I, the set ⋂α∈Jfαγ−1(xα)\bigcap\limits_{\alpha \in J} \overset{-1}{f_{\alpha\gamma}}(x_\alpha) has a greatest element equal to inf⁡α∈J(Mαγ(xα))\inf\limits_{\alpha \in J} (M_{\alpha\gamma}(x_\alpha)); furthermore, the intersection of GγG_\gamma and ⋂α∈Jfαγ−1(xα)\bigcap\limits_{\alpha \in J} \overset{-1}{f_{\alpha\gamma}}(x_\alpha) is the set (non-empty by hypothesis) of all yγ∈Gγy_\gamma \in G_\gamma such that

yγ⩽inf⁡α∈J(Mαγ(xα))y_\gamma \leqslant \inf_{\alpha \in J} (M_{\alpha\gamma}(x_\alpha))

(use condition (i)).

(b) Let J be any subset of I. A family xJ=(xα)α∈Jx_J = (x_\alpha)_{\alpha \in J}, where xα∈Gαx_\alpha \in G_\alpha for all α∈J\alpha \in J, is said to be coherent if every finite subfamily of xJx_J is coherent. If J≠IJ \neq I and if β∈I−J\beta \in I - J, show that there exists xβ∈Gβx_\beta \in G_\beta such that the family xJ∪{β}=(xα)α∈J∪{β}x_{J \cup \{\beta\}} = (x_\alpha)_{\alpha \in J \cup \{\beta\}} is coherent. (Using (a) and condition (iv), show that, for every finite subset F of J, if γ\gamma is an upper bound of F∪{β}F \cup \{\beta\}, then fβγ(Gγ∩⋂α∈Ffαγ−1(xα))f_{\beta\gamma}\left(G_\gamma \cap \bigcap\limits_{\alpha \in F} \overset{-1}{f_{\alpha\gamma}}(x_\alpha)\right) is the (non-empty) set of all yβ∈Gβy_\beta \in G_\beta which are ⩽fβγ(inf⁡α∈F(Mαγ(xα)))\leqslant f_{\beta\gamma}\left(\inf\limits_{\alpha \in F} (M_{\alpha\gamma}(x_\alpha))\right). Using the fact that EβE_\beta endowed with the opposite ordering is Noetherian, show next that there exist a finite subset F0F_0 of J and an upper bound γ0\gamma_0 of F0∪{β}F_0 \cup \{\beta\} such that for each finite subset F of J and each upper bound γ\gamma of F∪{β}F \cup \{\beta\} we have

fβγ(inf⁡α∈F(Mαj(xα)))⩾fβγ0(inf⁡α∈F0(Mαγ0(xα))).f_{\beta\gamma}\left(\inf_{\alpha \in F} (M_{\alpha j}(x_\alpha))\right) \geqslant f_{\beta\gamma_0}\left(\inf_{\alpha \in F_0} (M_{\alpha\gamma_0}(x_\alpha))\right).

Prove then that every element xβ∈Fβx_\beta \in F_\beta which is ⩽fβγ0(inf⁡α∈F0(Mαγ0(xα)))\leqslant f_{\beta\gamma_0}\left(\inf\limits_{\alpha \in F_0} (M_{\alpha\gamma_0}(x_\alpha))\right) satisfies the required conditions.

(c) Finally, complete the proof by showing that there exists a coherent family whose index set is the whole of I. (Order the set of coherent families xJx_J by the relation "xJx_J is a subfamily of xKx_K", and apply (b) and Zorn's lemma.)
