Commutative Algebra, chapter I, § 2. Flat modules
Let be a ring and a right -module.
(i) Suppose that is flat. For every element which is not a right divisor of , the relations imply .
(*) Recall that a right (resp. left) divisor of 0 in a ring is an element such that the mapping (resp. ) is not injective.
(ii) Suppose that is an integral domain in which every finitely generated ideal is principal (for example a principal ideal domain (Algebra, Chapter VII, , no. 1)). Then for to be flat it is necessary and sufficient that be torsion-free
We prove (i). Let , be the left -module homomorphism ; the hypothesis implies that is injective. As is flat, the homomorphism , is also injective. When , is canonically identified with , becomes the endomorphism of . Thus the relation implies .
We prove (ii). By (i), if is flat, is torsion-free. Conversely, let be a torsion-free -module; we verify that, for every finitely generated ideal of , the canonical homomorphism is injective (no. 3, Remark 1). This assertion is obvious if ; otherwise, by hypothesis for some , and is then an isomorphism of onto ; using to denote the canonical injection , is the homothety with ratio on and is injective since is assumed to be torsion-free. Then ; as is an isomorphism, is injective, which completes the proof.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
