Commutative Algebra, chapter III, § 4. Lifting in complete rings

For a polynomial P∈A[X]P \in \mathbf{A}[X] to be strongly relatively prime to X−aX - a (where a∈Aa \in \mathbf{A}), it is necessary and sufficient that P(a)P(a) be invertible in A\mathbf{A}. For if P and X−aX - a are strongly relatively prime, it follows from Proposition 1 that there exist c∈Ac \in \mathbf{A} and a polynomial Q∈A[X]Q \in \mathbf{A}[X] such that cP+(X−a)Q=1cP + (X - a)Q = 1, whence cP(a)=1cP(a) = 1 and P(a)P(a) is invertible. Conversely, by Euclidean division

P=(X−a)R+P(a) P = (X - a)R + P(a)

and, if P(a)=b−1P(a) = b^{-1}, where b∈Ab \in \mathbf{A}, we deduce that 1=bP−b(X−a)R1 = bP - b(X - a)R, which shows that P and X−aX - a are strongly relatively prime.

Let A\mathbf{A} and B\mathbf{B} be two commutative rings and f:A→Bf : \mathbf{A} \to \mathbf{B} a ring homomorphism. If P=∑i≥0aiXiP = \sum_{i \geq 0} a_i X^i is a formal power series in A[[X]]\mathbf{A}[[X]], let fˉ(P)\bar{f}(P) denote the formal power series ∑i≥0f(ai)Xi\sum_{i \geq 0} f(a_i) X^i in B[[X]]\mathbf{B}[[X]]. If P is a polynomial, so is fˉ(P)\bar{f}(P) and, if further P is monic, then fˉ(P)\bar{f}(P) is monic of the same degree as P. Finally, P↦fˉ(P)P \mapsto \bar{f}(P) is clearly a homomorphism of A[[X]]\mathbf{A}[[X]] to B[[X]]\mathbf{B}[[X]] which extends ff and maps X to X. The notation will be constantly used in this sense in the rest of this paragraph.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
