Commutative Algebra, chapter IV, § 1. Prime ideals associated with a module

Let AA be a Noetherian ring. MM an AA-module and aa an element of AA. For the homomorphism aM:x↦axa_M : x \mapsto ax of MM to be almost nilpotent, it is necessary and sufficient that aa belong to every ideal of Ass⁡(M)\operatorname{Ass}(M).

The condition of the statement is equivalent to saying that for all x∈Mx \in M there exists n(x)>0n(x) > 0 such that (Aa)n(x)(Ax)=0(Aa)^{n(x)}(Ax) = 0; by Proposition 9 this means also that aa belongs to all the prime ideals associated with the submodule AxAx of MM; the corollary then follows from the fact that Ass⁡(M)\operatorname{Ass}(M) is the union of the Ass⁡(Ax)\operatorname{Ass}(Ax) where xx runs through MM (no. 1, formula (1)).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
