Commutative Algebra, chapter VI, § 3. Valuations

Let CC be an integral domain, KK its field of fractions, C∗=C−{0}C^* = C - \{0\} and v:C→Γ∞v : C \to \Gamma_\infty a valuation on CC. Then there exists a unique valuation ww on KK which extends vv and w(K∗)w(K^*) is the subgroup of Γ\Gamma generated by v(C∗)v(C^*).

By Theorem 2 of Algebra, Chapter I, § 2, no. 7, there exists a unique homomorphism ww from K∗K^* to Γ\Gamma which extends v∣C∗v|C^* and w(K∗)w(K^*) is generated by v(C∗)v(C^*). It remains to prove that ww satisfies axiom (VLII_{\text{II}}). Then let x′∈K∗,y∈K∗x' \in K^*, y \in K^* be such that x+y∈K∗x + y \in K^*; there exists a∈C∗a \in \mathbf{C}^* such that ax∈C∗ax \in \mathbf{C}^* and ay∈C∗ay \in \mathbf{C}^*, whence a(x+y)∈C∗a(x + y) \in \mathbf{C}^*. Since the restriction of ww to C∗\mathbf{C}^* satisfies (VLII_{\text{II}}),

w(a(x+y))≥inf⁡(w(ax),w(ay)). w(a(x + y)) \geq \inf(w(ax), w(ay)).

Eliminating w(a)w(a) from both sides, we obtain

w(x+y)≥inf⁡(w(x),w(y)). w(x + y) \geq \inf(w(x), w(y)).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
