Commutative Algebra, chapter VI, § 4. The height of a valuation

*Let K be a field, B a valuation ring of K and h, the place & K associated with B (with values in κ(B)\kappa(B)). Then the mapping A↦hB(A)A \mapsto h_B(A) defines a bijection of the set A\mathscr{A} of valuation rings of K contained in B onto the set A′\mathscr{A}' of valuation rings of κ(B)\kappa(B).

If A∈AA \in \mathscr{A}, then hB(A)∈A′h_B(A) \in \mathscr{A}': for if x′=hB(x)x' = h_B(x) (where x∈Bx \in B) is an element of κ(B)−hB(A)\kappa(B) - h_B(A), then x∉Ax \notin A, hence x−1∈Ax^{-1} \in A and hB(x)−1∈hB(A)h_B(x)^{-1} \in h_B(A). On the other hand, for A∈AA \in \mathscr{A}, A⊃m(B)A \supset m(B) (Proposition 1 (b)) and hence the mapping,

A↦hB(A)A \mapsto h_B(A) is injective. Finally, let A′∈A′A' \in \mathscr{A}' and A=hB(A′)⊂BA = h_B(A') \subset B; we shall show, which will complete the proof, that A∈AA \in \mathscr{A}; if x∈K−Ax \in K - A, then either x∉Bx \notin B, or x∈Bx \in B; if x∉Bx \notin B, then x−1∈m(B)⊂Ax^{-1} \in m(B) \subset A; if x∈Bx \in B, then hB(x)∈κ(B)h_B(x) \in \kappa(B) and hB(x)∉Ah_B(x) \notin A, hence hB(x−1)∈Ah_B(x^{-1}) \in A and we conclude again that x−1∈Ax^{-1} \in A; hence A∈AA \in \mathscr{A}.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
