Commutative Algebra, chapter VI, § 4. The height of a valuation

Let A and B be two valuation rings of K, where A⊂BA \subset B; let A′=hB(A)A' = h_B(A), which is a valuation ring of κ(B)\kappa(B). The residue field κ(A′)\kappa(A') of A′A' is canonically isomorphic to the residue field κ(A)\kappa(A) of A and the place hAh_A associated with A is the composition hA′∘hBh_{A'} \circ h_B of the places associated with A and B.

Since the local ring A′A' is a quotient of the local ring AA, their residue fields are canonically isomorphic and the equation hA(x)=hA′(hB(x))h_A(x) = h_{A'}(h_B(x)) holds for x∈Ax \in A. On the other hand, if x∈B−Ax \in B - A, then hB(x)∉A′h_B(x) \notin A' and the two sides of the equation are equal to ∞\infty; the same is true if x∈K−Bx \in K - B.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
