Commutative Algebra, chapter VII, § 4. Modules over integrally closed Noetherian domains

*If a is an ideal ≠0\neq 0 of A,

χ(A/a)=χ((A:a)/A)=div a. \chi(A/a) = \chi((A : a)/A) = \mathrm{div}\, a.

Let p∈Pp \in P. Then aAp=pnpApaA_p = p^{n_p}A_p where np≥0n_p \geq 0, since ApA_p is a discrete valuation ring. As (A/a)p=Ap/aAp, lp(A/a)=np(A/a)_p = A_p/aA_p,\ l_p(A/a) = n_p, whence χ(A/a)=∑p∈Pnpp=div a\chi(A/a) = \sum_{p \in P} n_p p = \mathrm{div}\, a (§ 1, no. 4, Proposition 7).

On the other hand, (A:a)=A;aAp=p−npAp(A : a) = A ; aA_p = p^{-n_p}A_p, hence lp((A:a)/A)=npl_p((A : a)/A) = n_p and we conclude in the same way.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
