Algebra, chapter I, § 1. Laws of composition; associativity; commutativity

A subset AA of a set EE is called stable under the law of composition TT on EE if the composition of two elements of AA belongs to AA. The mapping (x,y)↦xTy(x, y) \mapsto x T y of A×AA \times A into AA is then called the law induced on AA by the law TT. The set AA with the law induced by TT is called a submagma of EE.

In other words, for AA to be stable under a law TT it is necessary and sufficient that ATA⊂AA T A \subset A. A stable subset of EE and the corresponding submagma are often identified.

The intersection of a family of stable subsets of EE is stable; in particular there exists a smallest stable subset AA of EE containing a given subset XX; it is said to be generated by XX and XX is called a generating system of AA or a generating set of AA. The corresponding submagma is also said to be generated by XX.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
