Algebra, chapter I, § 1. Laws of composition; associativity; commutativity

Let EE be an associative magma, XX and YY two subsets of EE. If every element of XX commutes with every element of YY every element of the stable subset generated by XX commutes with every element of the stable subset generated by YY.

Let X′X' and X′′X'' be the centralizer and bicentralizer of XX. They are stable subsets of EE. Now X⊂X′′X \subset X'' and Y⊂X′Y \subset X' and hence X′′X'' (resp. X′X') contains the stable subset of EE generated by XX (resp. YY). As every element of X′′X'' commutes with every element of X′X', the proposition follows.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
