Algebra, chapter I, § 5. Groups operating on a set

A cycle of order 2 is called a transposition.

Let xx and yy be two distinct elements of E. Let τx,y\tau_{x,y} denote the unique transposition with support {x,y}\{x, y\}.

For every permutation σ\sigma of E the permutation σ⋅τx,y⋅σ−1\sigma \cdot \tau_{x,y} \cdot \sigma^{-1} is a transposition whose support is {σ(x),σ(y)}\{\sigma(x), \sigma(y)\}. Hence:

(4)

σ⋅τx,y⋅σ−1=τσ(x),σ(y). \sigma \cdot \tau_{x,y} \cdot \sigma^{-1} = \tau_{\sigma(x), \sigma(y)}.

Transpositions thus form a conjugacy class in the group SE\mathfrak{S}_E.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
