Algebra, chapter I, § 6. Extensions, solvable groups, nilpotent groups

Let G be a group. The quotient group G/D(G) is commutative. Let π:G→G/D(G)\pi : G \to G/D(G) be the canonical homomorphism. Every homomorphism f of G into a commutative group G' can be expressed uniquely in the form f=fˉ∘πf = \bar{f} \circ \pi, where fˉ:G/D(G)→G′\bar{f} : G/D(G) \to G' is a homomorphism.

Now π(D(G))={e}\pi(D(G)) = \{e\}. As π\pi is surjective, it follows that D(G/D(G))={e}D(G/D(G)) = \{e\}, whence the first assertion. The second follows from § 4, no. 4, Proposition 5.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
