Algebra, chapter II, § 1. Modules

Let u:E→Fu : E \to F be a linear mapping. For there to exist a linear mapping v:F→Ev : F \to E such that v∘u=1Ev \circ u = 1_E (the case where uu is said to be left invertible and vv is said to be the left inverse of uu), it is necessary and sufficient that uu be injective and that its image be a direct factor in FF. The submodule Ker⁡(v)\operatorname{Ker}(v) of FF is then a supplement of Im⁡(u)\operatorname{Im}(u).

It is obviously necessary that uu be injective; as vv is then a retraction associated with uu, the conclusion also follows from Proposition 15.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
