Algebra, chapter II, § 3. Tensor products

The tensor product of the right A-module E and the left A-module F, denoted by E⊗AFE \otimes_A F or E⊗AFE \otimes_A F (or simply E⊗FE \otimes F if no confusion is to be feared) is the quotient Z\mathbf{Z}-module C/DC/D (the quotient of the Z\mathbf{Z}-module C of formal linear combinations of elements of E×FE \times F with coefficients in Z\mathbf{Z}, by the submodule DD generated by the elements of one of the types (2)). *For x∈Ex \in E and y∈Fy \in F, the element of E⊗AFE \otimes_A F which is the canonical image of the element (x,y)(x, y) of C=Z(E×F)C = \mathbf{Z}^{(E \times F)} is denoted by x⊗yx \otimes y and called the tensor product of xx and yy.

The mapping (x,y)↦x⊗y(x, y) \mapsto x \otimes y of E×FE \times F into E⊗AFE \otimes_A F is called canonical. It is a Z\mathbf{Z}-bilinear mapping which satisfies conditions (1).

We show that the tensor product E⊗AFE \otimes_A F and the above canonical mapping form a solution of the universal mapping problem posed earlier. To be precise:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
