Algebra, chapter II, § 3. Tensor products
(a) Let be a -linear mapping of into a -module . The mapping of into is -bilinear and satisfies conditions (1).
(b) Conversely, let be a -bilinear mapping of into a -module satisfying conditions (1). Then there exists one and only one -linear mapping of into such that for .
If denotes the canonical mapping of into , then ; whence (a). To show (b), we note that, in the notation of Definition 1, extends to a -linear mapping of into (§ 1, no. 11, Proposition 17). By virtue of relations (1), is zero for all the elements of of one of the types (2) and hence on . There therefore exists a -linear mapping of into such that , where is the canonical homomorphism (§ 1, no. 8, Remark). The uniqueness of is immediate since is generated, as a -module, by the elements of the form .
Proposition 1 defines a canonical isomorphism of the -module of -bilinear mappings of into , satisfying conditions (1), onto the -module .
When , conditions (1) are automatically satisfied for every -bilinear mapping and the submodule of is already generated by the elements of the first two types in (2).
If now we return to the general case and and denote the underlying -modules of and respectively, the above remark and Definition 1 show immediately that the -module can be canonically identified with the quotient of the -module by the sub--module generated by the elements of the form , where runs through , runs through and runs through .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
