Algebra, chapter II, § 3. Tensor products

Let A,BA, B be two rings, ρ:B→A\rho : B \to A a ring homomorphism and EE (resp. FF) a right (resp. left) AA-module. Then there exists one and only one Z\mathbf{Z}-linear mapping (6)

ϕ:ρ∗(E)⊗Bρ∗(F)→E⊗AF \phi : \rho_*(E) \otimes_B \rho_*(F) \to E \otimes_A F
such that, for all x∈Ex \in E and y∈Fy \in F, the image under ϕ\phi of the element x⊗yx \otimes y of ρ∗(E)⊗Bρ∗(F)\rho_*(E) \otimes_B \rho_*(F) is the element x⊗yx \otimes y of E⊗AFE \otimes_A F; this Z\mathbf{Z}-linear mapping is surjective.

We consider the mapping (x,y)↦x⊗y(x, y) \mapsto x \otimes y of ρ∗(E)×ρ∗(F)\rho_*(E) \times \rho_*(F) into E⊗AFE \otimes_A F; it is Z\mathbf{Z}-bilinear and, for all β∈B\beta \in B, by definition (xρ(β))⊗y=x⊗(ρ(β)y)(x \rho(\beta)) \otimes y = x \otimes (\rho(\beta)y), hence conditions (1) of no. 1 hold, whence the existence and uniqueness of ϕ\phi (no. 1, Proposition 1). The latter assertion follows from the fact that the elements x⊗yx \otimes y generate the Z\mathbf{Z}-module E⊗AFE \otimes_A F.

The mapping (6) is called canonical.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
