Algebra, chapter II, § 7. Vector spaces

The dimension of a vector space EE over a field KK, denoted by dim⁡KE\dim_K E or [E:K][E:K] (or simply dim⁡E\dim E) is the cardinal of any of the bases of EE. If MM is a subset of EE, the rank of MM (over KK*), denoted by* rg⁡M\operatorname{rg} M or rg⁡KM\operatorname{rg}_K M, is the dimension of the vector subspace of EE generated by MM.

To say that EE is finite-dimensional is equivalent to saying that EE is a KK-module of finite length and dim⁡KE=long⁡KE\dim_K E = \operatorname{long}_K E.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
