Algebra, chapter II, § 7. Vector spaces

Let F, F' be two subspaces of a vector space E, such that F⊂F′F \subset F'. Then codim⁡EF′≤codim⁡EF≤dim⁡E\operatorname{codim}_E F' \leq \operatorname{codim}_E F \leq \dim E. If codim⁡EF\operatorname{codim}_E F is finite, the relation codim⁡EF′=codim⁡EF\operatorname{codim}_E F' = \operatorname{codim}_E F implies F=F′F = F'.

The inequality codim⁡EF≤dim⁡E\operatorname{codim}_E F \leq \dim E is obvious from (9) and if dim⁡E\dim E is finite the relation codim⁡EF=dim⁡E\operatorname{codim}_E F = \dim E implies dim⁡F=0\dim F = 0 and hence F={0}F = \{0\}. The remainder of the proposition follows from this, for

codim⁡EF′=codim⁡E/F′(F′/F), \operatorname{codim}_E F' = \operatorname{codim}_{E/F'}(F'/F),
since E/F′E/F' is canonically isomorphic to (E/F)/(F′/F)(E/F)/(F'/F) (I, § 4, no. 7, Theorem 4).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
