Algebra, chapter II, § 7. Vector spaces

Let E,FE, F be two vector spaces over a field KK and u:E→Fu : E \to F a linear mapping. (i) rg(u)≤inf⁡(dim⁡E,dim⁡F)\mathrm{rg}(u) \leq \inf(\dim E, \dim F). (ii) Suppose that EE is finite-dimensional; in order that rg(u)=dim⁡E\mathrm{rg}(u) = \dim E, it is necessary and sufficient that uu be injective. (iii) Suppose that FF is finite-dimensional; in order that rg(u)=dim⁡F\mathrm{rg}(u) = \dim F, it is necessary and sufficient that uu be surjective.

This follows immediately from relations (12) and (13).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
