Algebra, chapter II, § 7. Vector spaces

Let E, F be two vector spaces over a field K and u:E→Fu : E \to F a linear mapping. For the linear equation

u(x)=y0 u(x) = y_0

to have at least one solution x∈Ex \in E, it is necessary and sufficient that y0y_0 be orthogonal to the kernel of the transpose mapping tu{}^t u.

The orthogonal of u(E)u(E) in F∗F^* is tu−1(0){}^t u^{-1}(0) (§ 2, no. 5, Corollary to Proposition 8) and the orthogonal of tu−1(0){}^t u^{-1}(0) in F is therefore u(E)u(E) (no. 5, Theorem 7 (ii)).

We shall obtain a more convenient criterion for systems of scalar linear equations

⟨x,xi∗⟩=ηi(i∈I) \langle x, x_i^* \rangle = \eta_i \quad (i \in I)

where the unknown xx takes its values in a vector space E over a field K, the xi∗x_i^* are linear forms on E and the right hand sides ηi\eta_i elements of K.

If we consider a basis (aλ)λ∈L(a_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} of E, the system (21) is equivalent to the system of equations

∑λ∈Lξλ⟨aλ,xi∗⟩=ηi(i∈I) \sum_{\lambda \in L} \xi_\lambda \langle a_\lambda, x_i^* \rangle = \eta_i \quad (i \in I)

with x=∑λ∈Lξλaλx = \sum_{\lambda \in L} \xi_\lambda a_\lambda, the solutions of (22) being of necessity families (ξλ)(\xi_\lambda) of elements of K of finite support.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
