Algebra, chapter III, § 8. Determinants

The determinant of an endomorphism uu of a free AA-module MM of finite dimension nn (II, § 7, no. 2, Corollary to Proposition 3 and Remark 1), denoted by det⁡u\det u, is the scalar λ\lambda such that ⋀n(u)\bigwedge^n(u) is the homothety of ratio λ\lambda.

By formula (4) of § 7, no. 2, det⁡u\det u is the unique scalar such that

(1)

u(x1)∧u(x2)∧⋯∧u(xn)=(det⁡u)⋅x1∧x2∧⋯∧xn u(x_1) \wedge u(x_2) \wedge \cdots \wedge u(x_n) = (\det u) \cdot x_1 \wedge x_2 \wedge \cdots \wedge x_n
for every sequence (xi)1≤i≤n(x_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} of nn elements of MM. If det⁡(u)=1\det(u) = 1, uu is said to be unimodular.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
