Algebra, chapter III, § 8. Determinants

For every square matrix XX over a commutative ring, the determinant of the transpose matrix tX{}^t X is equal to the determinant of XX.

Suppose that XX is of type (I, I). For every ordered pair of permutations σ,τ\sigma, \tau of SIS_I, (since multiplication is commutative)

∏i∈Iξσ(i),i=∏j∈Iξσ(τ(j)),τ(j). \prod_{i \in I} \xi_{\sigma(i), i} = \prod_{j \in I} \xi_{\sigma(\tau(j)), \tau(j)}.

In particular take τ=σ−1\tau = \sigma^{-1}; using the fact that εσ−1=εσ\varepsilon_{\sigma^{-1}} = \varepsilon_\sigma, it is seen that

det⁡X=∑σ∈SIεσ(∏i∈I,iξi,σ(i)), \det X = \sum_{\sigma \in S_I} \varepsilon_\sigma \left( \prod_{i \in I, i} \xi_{i, \sigma(i)} \right),

which proves the proposition.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
