Algebra, chapter III, § 8. Determinants

Let uu be an endomorphism of a finite-dimensional free A\mathbf{A}-module MM and tu^t u the transpose endomorphism of the dual M∗M^* (II, § 2, no. 5, Definition 5); then

det⁡(tu)=det⁡(u). \det(^t u) = \det(u).
If XX is the matrix of uu with respect to a basis of MM, tX^t X is the matrix of tu^t u with respect to the dual basis (II, § 10, no. 4, Proposition 3); as det⁡(u)=det⁡(X)\det(u) = \det(X) and det⁡(tu)=det⁡(tX)\det(^t u) = \det(^t X), the conclusion follows from Proposition 8.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
