Algebra, chapter III, § 8. Determinants

Let KK be a commutative field. The unimodular group SL(n,K)\mathbf{SL}(n, K) is generated by the matrices Bij(λ)B_{ij}(\lambda) with i≠ji \neq j and λ∈K\lambda \in K.

By II, § 10, no. 13, Proposition 14, we know that every matrix in GL(n,K)\mathbf{GL}(n, K) is a product of matrices of the form Bij(λ)B_{ij}(\lambda) and a matrix of the form diag⁡(1,1,…,1,α)\operatorname{diag}(1, 1, \ldots, 1, \alpha) with α∈K∗\alpha \in K^*. Now it is immediate that det⁡(Bij(λ))=1\det(B_{ij}(\lambda)) = 1 and det⁡(diag⁡(1,…,1,α))=α\det(\operatorname{diag}(1, \ldots, 1, \alpha)) = \alpha (no. 6, Example 2); whence the proposition.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
