Algebra, chapter III, § 8. Determinants

Let MM be a finite-dimensional free AA-module and uu an endomorphism of MM. The determinant of the endomorphism X−uˉX - \bar{u} of the free A[X]A[X]-module M[X]M[X] is called the characteristic polynomial of uu and is denoted by χu(X)\chi_u(X).

If MM is of rank nn, it follows from (49) that

χu(X)=∑j=0n(−1)jTr⁡(∧j(u))Xn−j \chi_u(X) = \sum_{j=0}^n (-1)^j \operatorname{Tr}(\wedge^j(u)) X^{n-j}

for det⁡(X−Yuˉ)=det⁡(X.In+YU)\det(X - Y \bar{u}) = \det(X . I_n + Y U) and det⁡(X−uˉ)=det⁡(X.In−U)\det(X - \bar{u}) = \det(X . I_n - U). It is therefore seen that χu(X)\chi_u(X) is a monic polynomial of degree nn, in which the coefficient of Xn−1X^{n-1} is −Tr⁡(u)-\operatorname{Tr}(u) and the constant term is (−1)ndet⁡(u)(-1)^n \det(u).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
