Algebra, chapter III, § 9. Norms and traces

(1) Let AA be a quadratic algebra over KK of type (α,β)(\alpha, \beta) and (e1,e2)(e_1, e_2) a basis of type (α,β)(\alpha, \beta) (§ 2, no. 3). For x=ξe1+ηe2x = \xi e_1 + \eta e_2, TrA/K(x)=2ξ+βη\mathrm{Tr}_{A/K}(x) = 2\xi + \beta \eta and NA/K(x)=ξ2+βξη−αη2N_{A/K}(x) = \xi^2 + \beta \xi \eta - \alpha \eta^2; these functions are therefore identical with the Cayley trace and norm of xx (§ 2, no. 24).

(2) Let AA be a quaternion algebra over KK. A direct calculation allows us to verify that TrA/K(x)=2T(x)\mathrm{Tr}_{A/\mathbf{K}}(x) = 2T(x) and NA/K(x)=(N(x))2N_{A/\mathbf{K}}(x) = (N(x))^2, where T and N are the Cayley trace and norm (§ 2, no. 4).

(3) Let A=Mn(K)A = \mathbf{M}_n(\mathbf{K}) and let the canonical basis (Eij)(E_{ij}) of A (II, § 10, no. 3) be arranged in lexicographic order. Then it is immediately seen that for every matrix X=∑i,jξijEijX = \sum_{i,j} \xi_{ij} E_{ij} the matrix (of order n2n^2) of the endomorphism Y↦XYY \mapsto XY is of the form

(X0…00X…0…………00…X) \begin{pmatrix} X & 0 & \ldots & 0 \\ 0 & X & \ldots & 0 \\ \ldots & \ldots & \ldots & \ldots \\ 0 & 0 & \ldots & X \end{pmatrix}

whence TrA/K(X)=n⋅Tr(X)\mathrm{Tr}_{A/\mathbf{K}}(X) = n \cdot \mathrm{Tr}(X) and NA/K(X)=(det⁡(X))nN_{A/\mathbf{K}}(X) = (\det(X))^n.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
