Algebra, chapter III, § 10. Derivations

The derivation δA\delta_A has the following universal property: for every (A,A)(A, A)-bimodule EE and every KK-derivation d:A→Ed : A \to E, there exists one and only one (A,A)(A, A)-bimodule homomorphism f:I→Ef : I \to E such that d=f∘δAd = f \circ \delta_A.

Note first that, for every (A,A)(A, A)-bimodule homomorphism f:I→Ef : I \to E, f∘δAf \circ \delta_A is a derivation (no. 7, Proposition 9). Conversely, let d:A→Ed : A \to E be a K-derivation; then we prove first that if there exists an (A,A)(A, A)-bimodule homomorphism f:I→Ef : I \to E such that d=f∘δAd = f \circ \delta_A, ff is uniquely determined by this condition for the definition of δA\delta_A gives

f(x⊗1−1⊗x)=dx f(x \otimes 1 - 1 \otimes x) = dx

and our assertion follows from the fact that the image of δA\delta_A already generates I as a left A-module (Lemma 1): hence of necessity

f(∑ixi⊗yi)=∑ixi⋅f(1⊗yi−yi⊗1)=−∑ixi⋅dyi. f\left( \sum_i x_i \otimes y_i \right) = \sum_i x_i \cdot f(1 \otimes y_i - y_i \otimes 1) = -\sum_i x_i \cdot dy_i.

Conversely, as the mapping (x,y)↦−x⋅dy(x, y) \mapsto -x \cdot dy of A×AA \times A into EE is KK-bilinear, there exists one and only one KK-linear mapping g:A⊗KA→Eg : A \otimes_K A \to E such that g(x⊗y)=−x⋅dyg(x \otimes y) = -x \cdot dy; it suffices to verify that the restriction ff of gg to II is A-linear for the left and right A-module structures. The first assertion is obvious since (xx′)⋅dy=x⋅(x′⋅dy)(xx') \cdot dy = x \cdot (x' \cdot dy); to prove the second, note that, if ∑ixi⊗yi∈I\sum_i x_i \otimes y_i \in I and x∈Ax \in A, then

∑ixi⋅d(yix)=∑ixi⋅dyi⋅x+∑i(xiyi)⋅dx \sum_i x_i \cdot d(y_i x) = \sum_i x_i \cdot dy_i \cdot x + \sum_i (x_i y_i) \cdot dx

but since ∑ixiyi=0\sum_i x_i y_i = 0 by definition of II, this completes the proof.

We have thus defined a canonical KK-module isomorphism f↦f∘δAf \mapsto f \circ \delta_A

Hom⁡(A,A)(I,E)→DK(A,E) \operatorname{Hom}_{(A, A)}(I, E) \to D_K(A, E)

the left hand side being the KK-module of (A,A)(A, A)-bimodule homomorphisms of AA into EE.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
