Algebra, chapter III, Appendix 0. Alternative algebras. Octonions

Let EE be an A-algebra such that the trilinear mapping (x,y,z)↦a(x,y,z)(x, y, z) \mapsto a(x, y, z) is alternating, SS a generating system of EE and UU a sub-A-module of EE containing SS and such that sU⊂UsU \subset U and Us⊂UUs \subset U for all s∈Ss \in S. Then U=EU = E.

The set U′U' of x∈Ex \in E such that xU⊂UxU \subset U and Ux⊂UUx \subset U is obviously a sub-A-module of EE, which contains SS by hypothesis. On the other hand, for x,yx, y in U′U' and u∈Uu \in U, by hypothesis

(xy)u=x(yu)+a(x,y,u)=x(yu)−a(x,u,y)=x(yu)−(xu)y+x(uy)∈U; (xy)u = x(yu) + a(x, y, u) = x(yu) - a(x, u, y) = x(yu) - (xu)y + x(uy) \in U;

on passing to the opposite algebra, we have similarly u(xy)∈Uu(xy) \in U. Hence U′U' is a subalgebra of EE and, since it contains SS, U′=EU' = E. Hence EU⊂UEU \subset U and a fortiori UU⊂UUU \subset U, which proves that UU is a subalgebra of EE; as it contains SS, U=EU = E, which proves the lemma.

A subset HH of FF is called strongly associative if a(u,v,w)=0a(u, v, w) = 0 when at least two of the elements u,v,wu, v, w belong to HH.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
