Algebra, chapter III, Appendix 0. Alternative algebras. Octonions

Suppose that the mapping aa is alternating and let X,Y\mathbf{X}, \mathbf{Y} be two strongly associative subalgebras of F\mathbf{F}. Then the subalgebra of E\mathbf{E} generated by X∪Y\mathbf{X} \cup \mathbf{Y} is associative.

Let ZZ be the set of z∈Ez \in \mathbf{E} such that a(u,v,z)=0a(u, v, z) = 0 for all u∈Xu \in \mathbf{X} and v∈Yv \in \mathbf{Y}, this is obviously a sub-A-module containing X\mathbf{X} and Y\mathbf{Y} since X\mathbf{X} and Y\mathbf{Y} are strongly associative; by Lemma 2, it will suffice to verify that, for u∈Xu \in \mathbf{X} and v∈Yv \in \mathbf{Y}, uZ⊂Z,vZ⊂Z,Zu⊂ZuZ \subset Z, vZ \subset Z, Zu \subset Z and Zv⊂ZZv \subset Z. Now, for u,u′u, u' in X\mathbf{X}, v∈Yv \in \mathbf{Y} and z∈Zz \in Z, by (2)

a(u′u,z,v)−a(u′,uz,v)+a(u′,u,zv)=a(u′,u,z)v+u′a(u,z,v)=0 a(u'u, z, v) - a(u', uz, v) + a(u', u, zv) = a(u', u, z)v + u'a(u, z, v) = 0
by virtue of the fact that X\mathbf{X} is strongly associative and the definition of ZZ. But as X\mathbf{X} is strongly associative, a(u′,u,zv)=0a(u', u, zv) = 0 and since u′u∈Xu'u \in \mathbf{X}, a(u′u,z,v)=0a(u'u, z, v) = 0 by definition of ZZ. Hence a(u′,uz,v)=0a(u', uz, v) = 0, which shows that uZ⊂ZuZ \subset Z. Applying (2) now with (p,q,r,s)=(v,z,u,u′)(p, q, r, s) = (v, z, u, u'), we obtain similarly Zu⊂ZZu \subset Z. Interchanging the roles of X\mathbf{X} and Y\mathbf{Y} and using the fact that aa is alternating, we obtain vZ⊂ZvZ \subset Z and Zv⊂ZZv \subset Z; whence the lemma.

It now suffices, to prove that (b) implies (a) in Proposition 1, to take X={x}\mathbf{X} = \{x\} and Y={y}\mathbf{Y} = \{y\}, using Lemma 4.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
