Algebra, chapter IV, § 1. Polynomials
— Let be a non-zero element of whose leading coefficient is invertible and . (i) For every there exist such that
Moreover, these conditions determine and uniquely. (ii) The sub-A-modules and of are supplementary in . (iii) Assume non-constant and consider as an -*module* by means of the homomorphism of into . Then is a free -*module* with basis . Assertions (i) and (ii) are immediate consequences of Prop. 10. Let us prove (iii). Let be the homomorphism of into . Consider first as polynomial ring in with coefficients in ; Cor. 1 of IV, p. 5 shows that the kernel of is the ideal of . Consider now as polynomial ring in with coefficients in ; then is an -linear mapping of into . Assertion (ii) above (applied to the polynomial in with coefficients in ) shows that is a basis of an -submodule of supplementary to . Since for every integer , (iii) follows at once.
With the notations of (i) we shall say that is the quotient and the remainder in the Euclidean division of by ; for the remainder to vanish it is necessary and sufficient that should divide .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
