Algebra, chapter IV, § 5. Symmetric tensors and polynomial mappings

— (i) Let m∈MGm \in M^G and h∈Hh \in H. Then hm∈MhGh−1hm \in M^{hGh^{-1}} and

TrH/hGh−1(hm)=TrH/Gm. \mathrm{Tr}_{H/hGh^{-1}}(hm) = \mathrm{Tr}_{H/G} m .

(ii) Let F be a subgroup of G of finite index in G, and let m∈MFm \in M^F, then

TrH/G(TrG/Fm)=TrH/Fm \mathrm{Tr}_{H/G}(\mathrm{Tr}_{G/F} m) = \mathrm{Tr}_{H/F} m

(iii) If m∈MHm \in M^H, then TrH/Gm=(H:G)⋅m\mathrm{Tr}_{H/G} m = (H : G) \cdot m.

(i) Let h∈Hh \in H. For h′∈Hh' \in H and m∈Mm \in M let us put φ(h′)=hh′h−1\varphi(h') = hh'h^{-1} and ψ(m)=hm\psi(m) = hm. We have φ(h′)ψ(m)=ψ(h′m)\varphi(h') \psi(m) = \psi(h'm); by transfer of structure we deduce that if m∈MGm \in M^G, then hm∈MhGh−1hm \in M^{hGh^{-1}} and

TrH/hGh−1(hm)=ψ(TrH/G(m)). \mathrm{Tr}_{H/hGh^{-1}}(hm) = \psi(\mathrm{Tr}_{H/G}(m)) .

Since TrH/G(m)∈MH\mathrm{Tr}_{H/G}(m) \in M^H, this proves (i).

(ii) Let m∈MFm \in M^F and let (gα)α∈A(g_\alpha)_\alpha \in_A be a system of representatives of the left cosets of G mod F, and (hβ)β∈B(h_\beta)_\beta \in_B a system of representatives of the left cosets of H mod G. Then (hβgα)(β,α)∈B×A(h_\beta g_\alpha)_{(\beta,\alpha) \in B \times A} is a system of representatives of the left cosets of H mod F. so

TrH/G(TrG/Fm)=∑β∈Bhβ(∑α∈Agαm)=∑(β,α)∈B×A(hβgα)m=TrH/Fm. \begin{align*} \mathrm{Tr}_{H/G}(\mathrm{Tr}_{G/F} m) &= \sum_{\beta \in B} h_\beta \left( \sum_{\alpha \in A} g_\alpha m \right) \\ &= \sum_{(\beta,\alpha) \in B \times A} (h_\beta g_\alpha) m = \mathrm{Tr}_{H/F} m . \end{align*}

(iii) This assertion is evident.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
