Algebra, chapter IV, § 6. Symmetric functions

With the above notation the determinant of the matrix M(f,g,p,q)M(f, g, p, q) is called the resultant of the pair (f,g)(f, g) for the degrees pp and qq, or simply the resultant of ff and gg if p=deg⁡fp = \deg f and q=deg⁡gq = \deg g.

The resultant is denoted by res⁡p,q(f,g)\operatorname{res}_{p,q}(f, g) or simply res⁡(f,g)\operatorname{res}(f, g) when p=deg⁡fp = \deg f, q=deg⁡gq = \deg g.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
