Algebra, chapter IV, § 6. Symmetric functions

Suppose that p+q≥1p + q \geq 1. By III, p. 532, formula (28), the image of φ\varphi contains the constant polynomial res⁡p,q(f,g)\operatorname{res}_{p,q}(f, g). Hence there exist a pair of polynomials (u,v)(u, v), with u∈Sq,v∈Spu \in S_q, v \in S_p such that

res⁡p,q(f,g)=uf+vg, \operatorname{res}_{p,q}(f, g) = uf + vg ,
whence
res⁡p,q(f,g)∈A∩(f,g). \operatorname{res}_{p,q}(f, g) \in A \cap (f, g) .
This pair (u,v)(u, v) is unique when res⁡p,q(f,g)\operatorname{res}_{p,q}(f, g) is cancellable in AA: for then φ\varphi is injective (III, p. 524, Prop. 3).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
