Algebra, chapter IV, § 6. Symmetric functions

— Assume that f is monic of degree p; with the above notations we have¹

res⁡p,q(f,g)=NE/A(g(x)). \operatorname{res}_{p,q}(f, g) = N_{E/A}(g(x)) .
(30)

¹ The resultant res⁡p,q(f,g)\operatorname{res}_{p,q}(f, g) is thus independent of qq when ff is monic of degree pp. We then denote it simply by res⁡(f,g)\operatorname{res}(f, g).

Let us define an A-linear mapping 00 of Sq×SpS_q \times S_p into Sp+qS_{p+q} by θ(u,v)=uf+v\theta(u, v) = uf + v. Then 00 maps the basis B1B_1 of Sq×SsS_q \times S_s into the sequence

(fXq−1,…,fX,f,Xp−1,…,X,1) (fX^{q-1}, \ldots, fX, f, X^{p-1}, \ldots, X, 1)
of elements of Sp+qS_{p+q}; hence the matrix MM, of 00 with respect to the bases B1,B2B_1, B_2 is lower triangular and its diagonal elements are equal to 1, whence det⁡M=1\det M = 1.

It follows that θ\theta is bijective and res⁡p,q(f,g)\operatorname{res}_{p,q}(f, g) is equal to the determinant of the endomorphism φ′=φ∘θ−1\varphi' = \varphi \circ \theta^{-1} of Sp−qS_{p-q}. Explicitly, we have

φ′(uf+v)=uf+vg \varphi'(uf + v) = uf + vg
for any pair (u,v)(u, v) in Sq×SsS_q \times S_s. Now we have A[X]=Sp+q+(f)A[X] = S_{p+q} + (f) and fSq=Ss∩(f)fS_q = S_s \cap (f), hence the canonical injection of Sp−sS_{p-s} into A[X]A[X] defines by the passage to quotients an isomorphism γ\gamma of Sp+q/fSqS_{p+q}/fS_q onto E. Let ψ\psi be the multiplication by g(x)g(x) in E. Formula (31) shows that φ′\varphi' induces the identity on fSqfS_q and γ−1ψγ\gamma^{-1}\psi\gamma on Sp+q/fSqS_{p+q}/fS_q. We thus have det⁡φ′=det⁡ψ\det \varphi' = \det \psi, whence (30) follows, because det⁡φ′=res⁡p,q(f,g)\det \varphi' = \operatorname{res}_{p,q}(f, g) and det⁡ψ=NE/A(g(x))\det \psi = N_{E/A}(g(x)), by definition.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
