Algebra, chapter IV, § 6. Symmetric functions

Let t be an element of A. There exists a commutative ring C containing A as subring, a subring B of C containing A, an element τ\tau of B invertible in C and a ring homomorphism p:B→Ap : B \to A such that p(τ)=tp(\tau) = t and the restriction of p to A is equal to Id.

It suffices to take for B the algebra A(N)A^{(\mathbf{N})} of the monoid N\mathbf{N}, that is, the polynomial algebra A[τ]A[\tau] in one indeterminate τ\tau, for C the algebra A(Z)A^{(\mathbf{Z})} of the group Z\mathbf{Z} and for p the homomorphism P↦P(t)P \mapsto P(t) of A(τ)A(\tau) into A.

With the notation of Lemma 5, where we have taken t = t_p, let us put

F=τXp+tp−1Xp−1+⋯+t1X+t0 F = \tau X^p + t_{p-1} X^{p-1} + \cdots + t_1 X + t_0
in B[X]. The coefficient of XpX^p in F is invertible in C; if we consider F, g, g1g_1 as polynomials of C[X] we thus have
res⁡p,q+q1(F,gg1)=res⁡p,q(F,g)⋅res⁡p,q1(F,g1) \operatorname{res}_{p,q+q_1}(F, gg_1) = \operatorname{res}_{p,q}(F, g) \cdot \operatorname{res}_{p,q_1}(F, g_1)
by what has been said. The resultants are unchanged if we consider F, g and g1g_1 as polynomials in B[X]. Since ρF=f^\rho F = f, ρg=g^\rho g = g, ρg1=g1^\rho g_1 = g_1, formula (35) follows from (38) and Remark 2 (IV, p. 77).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
