Algebra, chapter V, § 6. Etale algebras

— Suppose that KK has characteristic p≠0p \neq 0. For AA to be etale it is necessary and sufficient that A=K[Ap]A = K[A^p]. For every basis (ai)i(a_i)_i, of AA over KK, the family (aip)i(a_i^p)_i is then a basis of AA over KK.

Let us choose an algebraic closure Ω\Omega of KK. Given two KK-homomorphisms uu and vv of AA into Ω\Omega, if uu and vv have the same restriction to K[Ap]K[A^p], we have

u(x)p=u(xp)=v(xp)=v(x)p, u(x)^p = u(x^p) = v(x^p) = v(x)^p,

whence u(x)=v(x)u(x) = v(x)

for all x∈Ax \in A. We thus have the inequality [A:K],≤[K[Ap]:K]s[A : K], \leq [K[A^p] : K]_s; if AA is etale, we thus have

[A:K]=[A:K]s≤[K[Ap]:K]s≤[K[Ap]:K], [A : K] = [A : K]_s \leq [K[A^p] : K]_s \leq [K[A^p] : K],

whence A=K[Ap]A = K[A^p]

Conversely suppose that we have A=K[Ap]A = K[A^p]; let (ai)i∈I(a_i)_{i \in I} be a basis of AA over KK. By VV, p. 4, Prop. 2, b), the family (aip)i∈I(a_i^p)_{i \in I} generates the vector KK-space K[Ap]K[A^p] and since A=K[Ap]A = K[A^p] is of finite dimension equal to the cardinal of II, the family (aip)i∈I(a_i^p)_{i \in I} is a basis of AA over KK. Let uu be an element of Ω⊗KA\Omega \otimes_K A such that u2=0u^2 = 0, whence up=0u^p = 0; since (ai)i∈I(a_i)_{i \in I} is a basis of AA over KK, there exists a family (λi)i∈I(\lambda_i)_{i \in I} of elements of Ω\Omega such that u=∑i∈Iλi⊗aiu = \sum_{i \in I} \lambda_i \otimes a_i, whence up=∑i∈Iλip⊗aipu^p = \sum_{i \in I} \lambda_i^p \otimes a_i^p. Since (aip)i∈I(a_i^p)_{i \in I} is a basis of AA over KK and up=0u^p = 0, we must have λip=0\lambda_i^p = 0, whence λi=0\lambda_i = 0 for all i∈Ii \in I, and so u=0u = 0. This shows the ring Ω⊗KA\Omega \otimes_K A to be reduced; since Ω\Omega is perfect, the algebra AA over KK is etale by Th. 4.

For another characterization of etale algebras see VV, p. 48, Prop. 1.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
