Algebra, chapter V, § 7. Separable algebraic extensions

Let AA be a vector KK-space, V,A1,…,AnV, A_1, \ldots, A_n subspaces of AA. If Card(K)≥n\mathrm{Card}(K) \geq n and if VV is not contained in any of the AiA_i, then VV is not contained in A1∪…∪AnA_1 \cup \ldots \cup A_n.

Arguing by induction on nn, we need only prove that if V⊂AV \subset A, and V⊂A1∪…∪AnV \subset A_1 \cup \ldots \cup A_n, then V⊂A1∪…∪An−1V \subset A_1 \cup \ldots \cup A_{n-1}. Let x∈V,x∉Anx \in V, x \notin A_n, and let yy be arbitrary in VV. If y∈Kxy \in Kx, we have y∈A1∪…∪An−1y \in A_1 \cup \ldots \cup A_{n-1}; if not, then the elements xx and y+λx,λ∈Ky + \lambda x, \lambda \in K are strictly greater than nn in number and belong to A1∪…∪AnA_1 \cup \ldots \cup A_n, so two of them belong to the same AiA_i. Thus there exists i,1≤i≤ni, 1 \leq i \leq n such that either x∈Aix \in A_i and y+λx∈Aiy + \lambda x \in A_i for some λ∈K\lambda \in K, or y+μx∈Aiy + \mu x \in A_i and y+μx∈Aiy + \mu x \in A_i for two distinct scalars λ,μ∈K\lambda, \mu \in K. In both cases we conclude that x∈Aix \in A_i and y∈Aiy \in A_i; but this implies that i≠ni \neq n, hence y∈A1∪…∪An−1y \in A_1 \cup \ldots \cup A_{n-1}, as we wished to show.

This completes the proof of the equivalence of a) and b) in Th. 1. Finally if the extension EE is separable and of finite degree, condition b) holds, by V, p. 30, Prop. 3.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
