Algebra, V, p. 73, § 10. Galois extensions

Let NN be a Galois extension of finite degree over KK and let Γ\Gamma be the Galois group of NN over KK. Then there exists a normal basis of NN over KK; in other words, the K(Γ)\mathbf{K}^{(\Gamma)}-module NN is free of rank 1.

We shall give two proofs of this statement. The first uses the following lemma which will be proved in Chapter VIII (§ 2, No. 5).

\* Lemma 3. — Let AA be a KK-algebra, M1M_1 and M2M_2 two AA-modules of finite rank over KK and suppose that there exists an extension LL of KK such that the modules L⊗KM1L \otimes_K M_1 and L⊗KM2L \otimes_K M_2 over the ring L⊗KAL \otimes_K A are isomorphic. Then the AA-modules M1M_1 and M2M_2 are isomorphic.

We shall apply Lemma 3 in the case where A=K(Γ)A = \mathbf{K}^{(\Gamma)}, M1=NM_1 = N, M2=AM_2 = A, and L=NL = N. By the Cor. of V, p. 64 there exists a KK-isomorphism φ\varphi of N⊗KNN \otimes_K N onto N⊗KK(Γ)N \otimes_K \mathbf{K}^{(\Gamma)} which maps x⊗yx \otimes y to ∑xu1(y)⊗σ\sum x u^1(y) \otimes \sigma. It is clear that φ\varphi is an isomorphism of N⊗KK(Γ)N \otimes_K \mathbf{K}^{(\Gamma)}-modules and so the theorem follows from Lemma 3.

For the second proof we shall use the following proposition:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
