Algebra, chapter V, § 11. Abelian extensions

Let kk and n≥1n \geq 1 be two integers. Then the following assertions are equivalent:

a) the residue class of kk mod nn is invertible in the ring Z/nZ\mathbf{Z}/n\mathbf{Z}; b) the residue class of kk mod nn generates the cyclic group Z/nZ\mathbf{Z}/n\mathbf{Z}; c) the integers kk and nn are relatively prime (I, p. 112).

Each of the conditions a) and b) means that there exists an integer xx such that kx≡1(modn)kx \equiv 1 \pmod{n}, that is, there exist two integers xx and yy such that kx+ny=1kx + ny = 1. This latter condition just means that kk and nn are relatively prime.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
